nice good night

Excerpt, RECLAIMING YOUR LEGACY by Linda Goodnight.

The three sisters were still arguing at bedtime.

Willa kicked off her dusty boots and left them by the cabin door with a determined gesture. blow. “I’m going to hunt him down and collect that bounty and none of you will talk me out of it.”

“This is crazy”. Mercy, already in a long nightgown, loosened her hair and let it fall over her shoulder. “A woman can’t go bounty hunting.”

“Why not? I can ride and shoot better than most men.”

“It just isn’t done. Women don’t ride alone after outlaws. Lawmen do.

“I made this claim alone, didn’t I?”

Mercy had been left behind at the rail yard with Savannah, who couldn’t run on land any more than she could jump on the moon. Dad had run with Willa, expecting a double portion, but he had come up short. Willa hadn’t.

“There were many who tried to take it away from me because I was a woman.”

She’d faced off against the claim jumpers with a loaded rifle in her hand, determined to keep what she’d wagered until Dad and the sisters arrived to set up camp.

“Yes, and now we have to find a way to keep it.” Concern weighed on Mercy’s soft words. But bounty hunting is not the way, Willa. Riding alone behind an outlaw, a known killer, is too dangerous. Even for a man.

Mercy picked up a brush and, with more vigor than usual, began the first of a hundred strokes through her glorious hair.

Willa had given up such feminine niceties long ago. A braid down her back was enough. Practical.

No one would notice if she dressed up anyway.

Willa’s chin jutted out. “I will hire someone to accompany us. A tracker.

Mercy’s brush stopped. “Whose?”

Willa’s heart sped up at the truth in Mercy’s statement, though she didn’t dare let any of her sisters see her concern.

Finding an expert guide with the guts for bounty hunting would be quite difficult. Finding someone who would accept a share of the bounty in exchange for his services might be next to impossible. And walk the path with a woman? Even she saw the futility in that.

However, what other options did he have?

“I’m going to find one,” he said with false bravado. “With so many settlers coming and going in this territory, someone will know a guide.”

“Even if you find one, how will you know where to go?” Mercy resumed brushing her, her red hair shimmering in the lamplight. “This is a big country. A man on the run can hide in many places.”

Willa shivered, her heart racing in her chest as she pulled on her nightgown and turned the quilt Mercy’s mother had pieced together.

She didn’t remember her own mother, but she fondly remembered Dad’s second wife, Maeve, a gentle soul who had raised a needy, orphaned six-year-old girl. Maeve, as Irish as Dad, had been the balm that soothed Dad’s wanderlust for a while. Those were the good old days when Dad worked on the railroad and Maeve turned a dirt house into a loving home.

Excitement knotted in Willa’s chest. At times like this, when life was hard and decisions were more difficult, she missed having a mother to lean on. She missed Maeve.

She remembered Dad playing his fiddle by the firelight as Maeve’s rough hands gathered together the smallest pieces of fabric until a pattern emerged, surprising Willa.

She also remembered Maeve’s swollen belly and the promise of a brother or sister. He had gotten Mercy and lost Maeve on the same day full of pain.

Months later, while Dad was expecting his wife number three, a mail-order bride from Georgia, he’d given Willa the quilt.

Now, with the enormity of what he planned tight on his chest, he pulled the precious cover closer, imagining the comfort of Maeve’s scent of cookies and rosewater.

“The bounty hunter had a good idea that Dad’s killer was headed to Indian Territory to hide out for a spell,” he muttered. “I’ll start there.”

“William, stop it!” Get this out of your mind. By the light of a charcoal oil lamp, Savannah’s slender fingers poked a needle in and out of a torn shirt. “A woman traveling out there, even with the protection of a man, she would be in terrible danger.”
